You’ve just got your new football jersey — the colors are vibrant, the badge is crisp, and it fits perfectly. Now the question is: how do you keep it looking that way?
Football jerseys are made from performance fabrics that need specific care. Follow this guide and your jersey will look match-day fresh for years.
Washing Your Jersey
The Golden Rules
- Always turn it inside out — This protects the printed badge, sponsor logos, and any heat-applied details from rubbing against other clothes.
- Cold water only — Hot water damages the fabric and can cause prints to crack or peel. Use cold or lukewarm water (30°C / 86°F max).
- Gentle cycle — The delicate or gentle cycle reduces friction and stress on the fabric.
- Wash with similar colors — Especially for the first few washes, dark jerseys can bleed dye.
What NOT to Do
- ❌ Don’t use bleach — Even color-safe bleach can damage prints and fade colors
- ❌ Don’t use fabric softener — It coats the fabric and reduces breathability
- ❌ Don’t wash with heavy items — Jeans, towels, and zippers can snag and damage the jersey
- ❌ Don’t wring it out — Twisting stretches the fabric and distorts the shape
Drying Your Jersey
Best Method: Hang Dry
The safest way to dry your jersey is to hang it on a hanger or lay it flat on a drying rack. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade colors over time. A shaded, well-ventilated area is ideal.
Can I Use a Dryer?
We don’t recommend it. Dryer heat can:
- Shrink the fabric
- Cause prints to crack or peel
- Damage heat-applied sponsor logos
- Warp the badge
If you absolutely must use a dryer, use the lowest heat setting and remove the jersey while it’s still slightly damp.
Ironing Your Jersey
Never iron directly on prints, badges, or sponsor logos. The heat will melt or damage them.
If your jersey is wrinkled:
- Turn it inside out
- Use the lowest heat setting
- Place a thin cloth between the iron and the jersey
- Or better yet, hang it in the bathroom while you shower — the steam will release most wrinkles
Storing Your Jersey
Short-Term Storage
- Hang it up — Use a wide hanger (not wire) to maintain the shoulder shape
- Fold it properly — If you prefer to fold, lay it face-down, fold the sleeves in, then fold in half
- Keep it away from direct sunlight — UV rays fade colors over time
Long-Term Storage (For Collectors)
- Store in a cool, dry place
- Use acid-free tissue paper to prevent creasing
- Never store in plastic bags — they trap moisture and can cause mildew
- Consider a jersey display frame for your best pieces
Removing Stains
Grass Stains
Apply a small amount of white vinegar or rubbing alcohol to the stain. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then wash as normal.
Food & Drink Stains
Blot (don’t rub) the stain immediately. Apply a small amount of dish soap, let it sit for 10 minutes, then wash in cold water.
Sweat Stains
Mix baking soda with water to form a paste. Apply to the stain, let it sit for 30 minutes, then wash. This also helps with any lingering odors.
Ink Stains
Apply rubbing alcohol to a cotton ball and dab the stain. Rinse with cold water and repeat until the stain is gone.
How Often Should You Wash It?
- After every match or physical activity — Sweat and bacteria can damage fabric over time
- After 2-3 casual wears — If you’re just wearing it around town, you don’t need to wash it every time
- Before storing for the season — Always wash before long-term storage to prevent stains from setting
